Bright Spot: Konawaena Elementary Family Craft Night
Families can always use more positive opportunities to visit their student’s campus. Mandatory meetings with teachers and other staff can be seen as a chore or even provoke anxiety. But we know that good things happen when families, students, and staff gather together to do something fun. That’s just what happened at Konawaena Elementary School’s family craft night last December!

The Parent School Community Network Coordinator (PCNC) Richelle Tagawa used a mini grant from Hōkūpaʻa to purchase supplies for the onsite return of their annual Winter Craft Night. This year, 144 students and their families attended! Konawaena Elementary School serves a total of 560 students in grades Pre-K through 5. That means Winter Craft Night did something incredible by bringing in ~¼th of students! Each student got five crafts to work on, so that’s a lot of holiday decorations! We commend the school hosting the event in the evening to fit more families’ schedules.
Beyond having fun and being creative, the craft night gave everyone a chance to build relationships: students, ʻohana, and staff included. This was especially important, since this was the school’s first in-person family event since early 2020.
Mahalo to Richelle and Konawaena Elementary for putting on this fun event for families! Many school staff members planned and showed up outside of normal hours to make it happen. Hōkūpaʻa was glad to sponsor this event, and we look forward to next year’s.
